The group stage of the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil is almost done! There were thrilling games and unexpected results and it is not over yet. Four years after winning the World Cup, Spain is the first team to be eliminated from the tournament. We have seen outsider Costa Rica shocking the heavy favourites and taking the lead in group D by winning 3-1 against Uruguay and 1-0 against Italy. We have also seen a very intensive game between Germany and Ghana in group G which was absolutely enthralling and finally ended 2-2. The hot phase has begun and each team has only one game left to play.
In group A, Cameroon lost their first two games and there is no more chance for them to advance to the next round. In their last game on Monday they will play against the highly favoured Brazilians and according to the bookmakers, they are unlikely to win. However, the “Indomitable Lions” want to show a good performance and those who bet on Cameroon can get a very high odd of 30.00. Brazil has an odd of 1.17. The other game in group A will be Croatia against Mexico. Both teams have almost an equal chance with a slight advantage for Mexico (2.90).
In group B the two already eliminated teams Australia and Spain will only play for the honour. Spain is the clear favourite (1.50), but Australia is not without a chance, as Spain has shown fragility in the defence. For an Australian victory, the bookmakers will pay an odd of 8.40. The game between Chile and the Netherlands will be the absolute highlight in group B. Both teams have shown a great performance and managed to win their first two games. The Netherlands crushed Spain 5-1. But now, it is about the question which team will take the lead in the group. The Netherlands are slightly favoured (2.70) but Chile is not unlikely to win (2.90).
No victory, but no elimination. Greece promised goals that did not come when they lost 3-0 against Colombia and achieved a scoreless draw against Japan. On Tuesday, the Greek will face Ivory Coast in group C but they are the outsiders with an odd of 4.00. The Ivorians (2.10) will have a good chance to advance to the round of 16. Colombia managed to win their first two games and will face Japan in the final game in group C. Colombia (2.50) is the favourite but Japan (3.20) is not without a chance and has the opportunity to advance to the next round if they win this game.
In group D the surprise team of this World Cup, Costa Rica, will play against the Three Lions. Costa Rica won their two games 3-1 against Uruguay and 1-0 against Italy, while England lost 2-1 against Italy and 2-1 against Uruguay. Nonetheless, the bookmakers favour England in this game and give them an odd of 1.88. Those who bet on Costa Rica can get a high odd of 5.00. As Costa Rica reached the next round, Italy (2.82) and Uruguay (2.81) will meet each other in the decisive game.
In group E France will play against Ecuador and with two wins in hand, the “Equipe Tricolore” is the favourite in this game. France has an odd of 1.90 and Ecuador has 4.80. Switzerland wants to take the opportunity to reach the round of 16 when they play against Honduras. Switzerland was able to narrowly beat Ecuador 2-1 after they were 1-0 down but then they lost 5-2 against a strong French team. According to the bookmakers, Switzerland will make it and therefore the winning odd is 1.48. Those who bet on Honduras can get a very interesting odd of 9.00.
Argentina and Nigeria are the two favourites in group F and they will face each other in the last group match on Wednesday. Argentina is already through to the next round but Nigeria needs at least a draw. Argentina is the clear favourite with an odd of 1.65. Nigeria has a high odd of 9.10. With a 1-0 loss against Nigeria, Bosnia-Herzegovina is eliminated from the World Cup but they want to show a good performance in their final match against Iran. Bosnia-Herzegovina is slightly favoured and has an odd of 2.40. Iran has 3.60.
Portugal and Ghana want to take their final opportunity to reach the next round when they play against each other in group G on Thursday. Both teams have almost equal chances for a win but especially Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal is under pressure. Portugal has 2.30, Ghana has 3.40. Germany will meet the USA and after their great performance against Portugal and Ghana, the Germans are willing to finish the group stage in first place. According to the bookmakers, Germany is the clear favourite, with a winning odd of 1.90, whereas the USA has 18.00.
