Germany have progressed to the knockout stage and will face Mexico in the semi-final of the 2017 Confederations Cup on Thursday. Loew’s men are still unbeaten in the competition and finished in first place in their group. Mexico are also without a loss but finished only in second place due to inferior goal difference compared to Portugal. The Germans have shown convincing performances in their three group games and will therefore be favoured in our betting tip. The match will kick off at 8:00 p.m. at the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi.
Germany are a goal threat up front – favourites in the betting tip
Germany are amongst the bookmakers’ favourites to win the 2017 Confederations Cup. Joachim Loew has left some key players at home for the trip to Russia, including Toni Kroos, Thomas Mueller and Mesut Oezil, so he could give new and fresh talents a chance to shine. The young German side has stepped up impressively with a 3-2 victory over Australia, followed by 1-1 draw against Copa America holders Chile. With four points from their first two games, they needed just a point in their last group game to secure the ticket for the next round. Cameroon proved to be strong opposition but Germany once again showed effective offensive actions. After a scoreless first period, Demirbay and Werner gave Germany a comfortable 2-0 lead. Aboubakar managed to get one back for Cameroon in the 77th minute, but Werner secured Germany a 3-1 win with his second goal of the game just three minutes later. Things are not getting easier in the semis, where they face Mexico. Germany need to strengthen their defence if they want to make it to the final in Saint Petersburg, but we think they are the favourites in this one.
Mexico are hard to predict ahead of the game – value profit in the best odds
Mexico survived their group with New Zealand, Portugal and hosts Russia unbeaten, finishing in second place due to inferior goal difference compared with Portugal. The lucky 2-2 draw against European Champions Portugal was followed by a hard-fought 2-1 victory over New Zealand. Mexico were 1-0 down to Russia in their last group game, but Araujo equalised in the first half. The second half was an open affair with plenty of goal-scoring chances at both ends. Hirving Lozano was ineffective in the first half and came to life after the break, scoring the winner in the 2-1 victory which secured the Mexicans a place in the knockout round. Mexico are still unbeaten in the tournament but will only be outsiders against World Champions Germany. Nonetheless, football fans around the globe are looking forward to an interesting semi-final in which anything can happen.
Betting tip for Germany versus Mexico
Two strong and unbeaten sides meet in the second semi-final, with Germany big favourites with odds between 1.98 and 2.15. Mexico have shown that they can turn games around, but they are just outsiders with odds ranging from 3.25 to 4.00. However, a promising value profit of 7.67% could make it interesting to bet on the Mexicans. A draw after 90 minutes is likely and will pay out odds between 3.23 and 3.70. Our tip: We expect a tight and intense game with many goals. Both sides will play courageously and with ambition as their confidence levels are high. Loew’s young players have shown a lot of skills and quality, and for that reason, we go for a Germany victory over Mexico at best odds of 2.13.
